The Free Market pavilion will arrive in O’Connell Square, Mountmellick on September 5th, and will be the focus of three days of activities and fun in the town centre. The programme of events will begin with a public lecture and launch party in Mountmellick library on Thursday September 5th. The installation of the pavilion in the market square will be supplemented with work installed in shop units around the square.
In Mountmellick, we’ll be emphasising the importance of town citizens of all ages getting involved in decision making for their town, and are working with Mountmellick Community College on events and workshops with local teenagers.
You are invited to take part in a series of free events helping us to spark new conversations around the future of our towns. A programme of events will run throughout the day across Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can join us on guided walking tours, contribute to Vox Pop recording sessions, and for younger townies the team has designed a special Townie Scavenger Hunt. The Free Market team will be on hand to chat and learn about Mountmellick, as they continue to gather experiences, thoughts and dreams for towns on each stop of the National Tour journey.
Original content from the Venice Biennale exhibition will be included in the exhibition – including architectural models and drawings describing both the historic and contemporary conditions of the town. Specially commissioned photographs and drone photography will also be included, as will audio soundscapes and recordings. Free Market News, which contains writings on rural towns from nearly 40 expert contributors, will be available to browse and take home.
